Howard Padwa, PhD

Dr. Howard Padwa is a historian and qualitative researcher working with UCLA’s Integrated Substance Abuse Programs (ISAP). He studied at the University of Delaware, the London School of Economics, and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris before earning his doctorate in History from UCLA and receiving post-doctoral training in addiction health services research at ISAP. As a graduate student, Dr. Padwa worked as an ethnographer for an NIH-funded study of chronic pain in children and adolescents; after completing his doctorate, he was a clinic ethnographer and policy researcher for a National Institute of Mental Health funded study of the implementation of the California Mental Health Services Act in Los Angeles County, for which Joel Braslow was the PI. More recently, his research has focused on drug policy, and the integration of behavioral, medical, and psychosocial services for vulnerable populations in California.
